Navy SEAL's have gained their respect and admiration through their selection process and historical successes in military operations. Unlike the other Special Operations forces (Force Recon, SAS, Rangers, etc.) the SEAL's are masters of combat in all elements - Sea, Air and Land, whereas their counterparts might be proficient in one or maybe even two.
SEAL's are typically given the toughest assignments, and attrition rates are higher than you might think. During my time in the Navy, SEAL's could only be of non-technical rates. However, force requirements have since changed that, and all rates can now apply, providing they can meet the basic physical requirements and pass the entrance test.
SEAL's are essentially Olympic athletes with unbelievable knowledge in weapons, explosives, counter-terrorist and guerrilla warfare tactics. They are the absolute best at what they do, and their training is considered the toughest of all the services. It's also why the acceptance rate is so low - only about 1% of those who volunteer ever make it through BUD/S training. It's equivalent to any given student who begins Martial Arts training and makes it to Black Belt. The mental focus, physical and mental demands and dedication are extreme.
MARSOC was created so the USMC could take part in USSOCOM. MARSOC was only created in 2006 and the US Navy SEALs have been around since the 1960's. The reason MARSOC isn't as well known as US Navy SEALs is because they are such a new addition to USSOCOM andthey are still undergoing construction.
