Why do chickens up and die?

There could be many reasons for the seemingly healthy chick to die. Nutritional, Disease or Genetic.

Congenital loco & Congenital tremor are two of the common Genetic causes.

Brooding pneumonia,Smothering,dehydration, pasting, chilling during the brooding period.

Salt poisoning is common when on a well system (I use bottled water until the are in the yard).

A sad but real fact of life around a farm, one day your favorite hen is giving you your breakfast egg and the next morning you find her dead in the chicken coop. Chickens have a relatively short lifespan when compared to humans. A good hen, well treated, can live up to 10 years but few seldom do. Laying hens expend a load of energy producing eggs. They are susceptible to disease and predators. On most small farms a healthy hen more than 3 years old and past her laying years is Sunday dinner. Many kids raised on a farm have a "pet" and it is often a chicken. The circle of life is learned at an early age when you live on a farm.

Sometimes it takes rabbits up to three litters to get what is going on and be a good parent. However, you also have to do your part. Make sure they have an adequate nest. It should have the mother's fur and something elso to nest with (timothy hay or perhaps cotton from a pillow). They should be placed somewhere warm and quiet so they mother doesn't get stressed out. If there isn't somewhere warm to put them you can use a heating pad on the lowest setting and place it under their nest box. Nevertheless, some mother rabbits just aren't good parents and never will be. It is cruel to keep bringing rabbits into the world just for them to die so at this point be a nice person and stop breeding the rabbit.

Old age, chickens get old just like every creature on earth. Parts give up and fail.

Disease, there are many diseases a chicken can die from, often, when a chicken gets sick the other members of the flock will hasten its demise because "survival of the fittest" certainly plays a role among flock members. And a sick or injured bird is at the mercy of all the healthy birds.

Predators and accident take a toll on chickens, they are not usually the smartest at self preservation.
