There are several reasons. The first is over hunting a particular animal such as the tiger. Then, human encroachment on the territories of species leaving them no space to live or eat. Right now, the weather is playing havoc with polar bears due to the rapid melting of the polar ice cap. the large ice floes that they live on are disappearing.

Of course if the polar icecap continues to melt, the sea levels will rise and perhaps even New York with become extinct !!!!!!

Animals are usually extinct due to either a climate change, or being hunted by dumb people. For example, deer are endangered because people shoot them for fun. Elephants are endangered because many people kill them for their ivory tusks, so they can sell them and make things out of them.

As for plants, they can become endangered usually from climate changes, or not enough rainfall in a climate.

Another View:

Most legal hunters actually assist animal populations by hunting, keeping populations under control. Deer, especially tend to over populate quickly, and this makes the herd subject to diseases that can decimate local populations. Most deer species are far from endangered.

There is quite a difference between legal hunting and poachers.

Whats are the causes of extinction?

An animal might be hunted into extinction. Some of the last Australian thylacines were shot to death, though the very last one probably died in a zoo. The passenger pigeon was hunted into extinction. Disease can also wipe out a species. The Tasmanian devils are threated by a face cancer. An asteroid (or comet) impact may have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. If an animal's food source becomes extinct, or the animal is driven from a key food source, that can cause it to become extinct. Competition for a food source can also lead to extinction, for example, if some other species devours all the food. It was once thought that the dinosaurs may have become extinct because little mammals ate all their eggs. Invasive species may step up competition for resources, driving native species to extinction. Also, extinction may be caused by a combination of these factors.
