Almost all of the energy put into a bicycle actually goes toward making the bicycle move.
On the other hand, a car "loses" a lot of energy. While there's a lot more energy in car fuel than a person has at her disposal, only about 20% of that energy can actually go towards making the car move. This is because cars work by burning fuel. Due to the laws of thermodynamics, this process converts almost all of the energy in the fuel into useless heat instead of energy that can make the car move. Further, because this is caused by an intrinsic law of nature, there's no way around it.
The same applies to any sort of transportation that works by burning things (including electric-powered things, since we get most of that electricity from burning things).
