Exact reasons are not available to the public, but general basis was that allegedly they are used mostly by criminals, which is an obvious fallacy. Majority of the knives used in stabbing crime are kitchen knives.
Unfortunately, many laws have their roots in reality created by movies, books and tv shows, completely disregarding real life experience.
Added: Because most jurisdictions classify them as "gravity knives" which are illegal in virtually every state of which I am aware.
