I think it originated at the time of building the first Mersey tunnel. The workers found that when using the spade at an angle they had much more wear on their left shoe soles [being mostly right -handed] ; so to counteract this they made some improvised covers for their soles from strips of metal, which they placed on their left shoes. These made a clatter as they walked on the cobbles home from work, but only as they put their left feet down. As most of the workers were recruited from Ireland and hence Catholic, the term 'left footer' became a term for Catholics.
