Character traits define a person , for example humour maybe an important character trait (for you) otherwise you can't have a good laugh and relax! So without them everyone would be boring and have no depth to them!

Character and Plot are what distinguish a story from an essay. If you don't have both plot and character then you don't have a story. You can have a story without a plot (character study) or a story without characters (although this is very rare indeed) but you can't do without both.
