Why are cats extremely scared of vacuums?

I have two theories 1 There is a very high pitched noise that upsets them. 2 That tail is a very tempting target (especially for kids) and the cat has learnt that if it does not want it's tail being sucked into the vacuum cleaners hose it had better make itself scarce quickly.

It can be for any number of reasons. The first two that spring to mind are;

1) The sudden burst of noise frightened it

2) It's an unfamiliar, very loud thing that's wizzing around very fast.

Dogs have the greatest hearing so the vacuum cleaner probably hurts their ears.

they might not know it is a vacuum cleaner, especially if they are blue eyed (blind), and think it is a predator because of the noise

Dogs dont like vaccumes because they are very loud for them and suck their nose in when they try to sniff it!

I think they are scared of a vacuum mostly because of the sound and the fact that you roll it back and forth at them.
