The drink coaster was originally called a slider. They were used to place cold bottles or glasses on to prevent damage to whatever was underneath. They were also used to slide the item across the surface. It was replaced with the word coaster sometime in the 18th century.

Coaster- "round stand for a decanter" is first attested 1887, possibly from a resemblance to sleds or because it "coasts" around the table to each guest after dinner.

What is Au13 mean at californias great America new coaster?

Au13 is a codename for CGA's coaster. We speculate that the coaster's true name may be "Gold Striker." In the code name, 'Au' is the chemical name for gold (see the periodic table), and the 13 refers to the year the ride will debut, which will be 2013. Coincidentally, if we count every coaster Great America has had, both standing/running and removed, this will be the park's 13th coaster to come in.
