Why are dumbbells called dumbbells?

Early ones were bell-shaped, but made no sounds. ("Dumb" is an old term for "mute".)

'Dumb' is still in use in Britain, meaning 'mute' The use of 'dumb' meaning' 'stupid' is chiefly North American.
