Why is grammar important?

Grammar is important because other people think grammar is important. There are all kinds of situations where you'll want to have people think you can speak well (job interviews, papers, etc.) even though you can still be understood if you speak without good grammar. But it is the basis of acquisition of language. Children have inborn gramar rules which enable them to learn language. That's why acquisition is dfferent from learning which is based on attempt and error method.

GRAMMAR and SPELLING are IMPORTANT because it is formal to use the correct grammar and terminology when writing to somebody of importance. For example, when applying for a job, one would need to use the correct grammar and spellings, because if the receiver of one's application were to notice mistakes and simple errors in your writing it is likely that they would dismiss you as being uneducated and not worthy of the job. This is judgmental but unfortunately how people are in the modern day. Once an English teacher that I know submitted an application for a job teaching English Literature to secondary school children. He didn't get the job. Later he realized that there was a silly spelling error in his application - so he revised it and corrected the spelling, then resubmitted his application. This time, he got the job. You have asked a question that I find rather hard to explain; especially in simple terms so as to not confuse younger readers.
