There are different groups of Travellers just as there are different groups of settled communities ie. British, British Muslim, Polish etc.
I am not a Romany and as such can not answer the full history in this text. However, as I understand it they originated from the East and have travelled (and been persecuted) for many years all over the world, just like we have.
So when we go to Spain to live, for example, we'll be called a British expatriates, even the 2nd/3rd generation etc who would technically be Spanish by birth. Same with Gypsies whether born here or not, travelling or not.
The word Gypsy came from the Egyptian. "The gyptians helped me" Subsequently shorted to Gypsy.
In the UK, again as I understand it there are Romany, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and New Travellers. All have their different cultures and quirks just like the rest of us.

I'm a scottish traveller and am also a recgonised ethnic minority now in Scotland we share a simmilar but altogather diffrent language and history to that of Irish travellers and English and welsh travellers...there are sub romani groups in both England and Scotland,not all who say they are romany are and most people don't understand where the romany gypsies originally came from,its said it was from India and thair are darker haired skinned travellers in Ireland and Scotland and thair are some very white groups who call them selves romany...I'm not a geneologist but there needs more research into this...its a rich and diverse heritage and alliance between the gypsy/travellers
