Evolution has worked out that this is the safest way to be born. The head is the largest part of the infant and also the part that needs to be born first due to the need to breath. When the placenta is ripped from the wall of the woman's uterus it stops giving oxygen to the baby. The baby needs to get its nose and mouth out of the womb and vaginal canal is a great deal of haste when this happens. If babies were always born breach (feet first) many infants would die before being born. It's not just humans, all mammals give birth head first, for the same reasons.
