The familiar beetle, usually with black spots on red, is called ladybug in the US, and ladybird in most of the rest of the English-speaking world.
The name ladybird comes from the vernacular name for the common 7-spot ladybird (Coccinella 7-puncata) in Europe: Our Lady's Bird -- the Lady in this case being The Virgin Mary. The red color of the elytra (wing cover) represents her cloak, and the seven spots represent the Virgin's seven joys and seven sorrows.
Relating Ladybirds to the Virgin Mary is not unusual, in 1991 Dr. A.W. Exell published his book History of the Ladybird in which he cites 329 common names for the Ladybird from 55 countries, of which over 80 refer to the Virgin Mary and more than 50 are dedicated to God. Contrarily one Italian name is 'Galineta del Diaolo' or 'The Devils Chicken'. Other names include the Swedish Himelska nyckla or 'The Keys of Heaven' and the Cherokee 'Great Beloved Woman'.

Ladybugs, or ladybird beetles, got their name about 500 years ago in Europe. It seems that farmers were having big trouble with insects called aphids (AY-fids). The aphids were sucking the juices from the farmers' grape vines. So the farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. (People of some religions believe that Mary is the Mother of God.)

Later, lots of little red beetles showed up and ate the aphids. The farmers thought their prayers had been answered. So they named the helpful beetles in honor of Mary, who is also known as "Our Lady."

In Europe, during the Middle Ages, insects were destroying the crops, so the Catholic farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. Soon the Ladybugs came, ate the plant-destroying pests and saved the crops! The farmers began calling the ladybugs "The Beetles of Our Lady", and they eventually became known as "Lady Beetles"! The red wings represented the Virgin's cloak and the black spots represented her joys and sorrows. They didn't differentiate between males and females.

Also, they are NOT called ladybirds because there are not just ladybirds that are ladies because if they were all ladies they would not be able to mate.

That both the female and the male of the ladybug are considered good luck is a reason why they both are so called. In many of the European countries, they were linked with a major female goddess. With the rise of Christianity, that main female figure to be admired and honored became the Lady Mary Mother of Jesus of Nazareth [c. 7-4 B.C.E. - c. A.D. 30].

It's so-called, as a beetle from Our Lady. The name was well established by Medieval times. Churchmen of the time considered the beneficial aphid eater a gift from Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth [c. 7-4 B.C.E. - c. A.D. 30].
