Lions are endangered due to two main reasons.

 Loss of habitat - with growing human populations, humans are venturing deeper and deeper into forests in search of land thereby shrinking the lions habitat

 Hunting - killing and hunting lions was considered a brave mans sport in the early 1990's. This caused a significant demise in lion numbers.

Governments worldwide have banned hunting lions and as a result, their numbers are stabilizing as of now.

Habitat Loss due to the population explosion in India is one of the major causes for the decline in lion population numbers.

However, the biggest cause was Hunting. Killing lions was considered a brave mans sport and many thousands of lions were killed by hunters in the past few decades before Indian independence. Lion population was in tens of thousands in the early 1900 and it came down to a few hundred by the time india got independence mainly due to extensive hunting

African lions are found in much higher numbers than their Asian cousins. They too were subject to extensive hunting but due to the recent ban in hunting, they are found in good numbers
