They are big boned, actually. The Maine Coon was bred from a strain of barn cats that developed naturally in the state of Maine. These cats grew long, thick fur, large paws, and a heavy build to withstand the cold in winter, and do their job as mousers. As a result, these are among the largest of the domestic cat breeds. Males of appropriate weight for their size can reach 18 pounds!
While any cat that doesn't get sufficient exercise and is overfed may become overweight, most of what LOOKS like fat on a Maine Coon is actually its extremely thick, long fur. If you were to shave one of these cats (which might be necessary if you didn't keep it groomed!) you would be surprised at how much less cat there is under the fur.
