There are two reasons why there are many parks located in the west.

The first is that, unlike the east, the west was largely undeveloped; there were many large, uninhabited tracts of land when many national parks were being created in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries.

The second reason is that conservation efforts, especially in the early days, were directed toward protecting forests and watersheds. The mountainous west was ideal for these efforts.

While the east has its share of national parks and monuments, these tend to be smaller and more historically significant. Unfortunately, relatively little has been done to protect prairieland.

Yes and no. The designation "National Park" applies to more sites in the west than in the east, and more land area is certainly under the designation national park in the west. However, more sites managed by the National Park Service are in the east; these tend to be monuments, historic sites, etc., rather than national parks.

Why are most national parks located in the western US?

When the national park movement began, many of the first national parks were set aside in pristine wilderness areas, and most of those areas were in unsettled places in the west. It was relatively easy to set aside large areas of land because few people lived in those areas compared with the east. It was much more controversial when national parks were established in the east, such as Shenandoah National Park, which forced many people already living there out of their homes.
