Mules are sterile since they are a hybrid of a horse and a donkey: whenever members of two different species reproduce, their offspring(that is, IF they produce offspring, and there are very few cases, such as the mule) produce hybrids possessing qualities of both parents but unable to pass down their genes to their posterity, since they can't have any.

Mules are a cross between horses and donkeys. Horses have 64 chromosomes and donkeys have only 62 chromosomes. The two are similar enough to breed but as a result the foal (being a mule) will only have 62 full chromosomes and one half of a chromosome (offspring gets half of moms and half of dads chromosomes). This effects the genes that control reproduction.

Well most mules are sterile due to them being a hybrid animal (Horse x Donkey) and they inherit a odd number of chromosomes that make it hard or even impossible for them to reproduce. There have however been occurrences of female mules giving birth to live foals.

If they were, we wouldn't be able to breed them, would we? They do, however, show erratic levels of fertility and can ovulate without it showing so can be difficult to breed, especially in the temperate zones.

All male mules are sterile. Some female mules are sub-fertile and can be stimulated to ovulate then crossed with a horse, donkey or other equid. This is typical of all mammalian hybrids.
