It could be that you are using toothpaste or mouthwash and you still have the taste in your mouth, or it may be that you are ill. You should go see a doctor if it's been going on for a while as some people are born with a disease that makes your taste buds off. Usually this diesease effects people after they've been ill. Please go see a doctor.

As you get older, your tastebuds weaken. Your sense of taste can also weaken when you are sick, irritate your senses with extreme temperatures, smoking, spicy foods, etc, however, it generally is not permanent, as the nerve endings will heal with time.

Well, I am not sure but I think about 1/3 of my tastebuds were gone becausee of a bacteria. I have noticed for so many months that I could not use my tongue-scraper on most of my tongue because it was smooth and painful. After having an UGI, for other reasons, the taste-buds came back. As if I had a brand new tongue. The treatment of 2 weeks, non-stop of 2 different antibiotics cured my tongue problem. I was diagnosed with H-pylori (bacteria that causes ulcers). So the antibiotics healed my tongue.
