Why is Barack Obama an important leader?

Four years later, most analysts would say his style is often collaborative-- he does not like arguments and he likes to listen to other opinions before making a decision. One of his leadership qualities is that he is very decisive; when he makes a decision, he believes it is the right one. Another of his qualities is he is thorough: he does research, talks with experts, and gets the facts on issues. And a third quality is that he can cut through the spin and the talking points to find what needs to be done. On the other hand, some of his critics say he is too cerebral, too much of a thinker, and often very aloof.

One of the first jobs of a politician is to appoint the people that will advise and work with him. Usually these posts come with a fair amount of power, money and prestige. Because of this many politicians use this opportunity to return favors to people who helped them reach their new appointment. What inevitably happens is that the best people for the job are not appointed.

President-elect Obama's team has been carefully selected and well thought out. He has been choosing experts and strong, intelligent candidates for each position that he has filled. This shows his strong leadership qualities. But he has also used his website to seek out ideas and opinions from the average person, and to give them the chance to express their views.

The first steps to being a great leader include:

• Surrounding yourself with the right people for the job.
• Understanding that everyone has a unique perspective and you should not overlook the advice of a "common man."

President-elect Obama seems to be starting on the right foot. Let us hope that he continues in the right direction, for surrounding yourself with people with the right answers doesn't mean that you'll be able to identify which answer is right. Nor does it mean that you'll listen to the right answer. Sometimes it can be a hard choice to make.

His thought pattern of compassionate, gentleness, forgiveness, love, hope and inclusion are apparrent in his everyday life habits. Thus, whether you voted for President Obama or not, he is the leader of the United States government, and the person who directs American foreign and domestic policy.
