Graphite is used in pencils as the way its atoms are structured allow for the graphite atoms to slide off the pencil and onto the paper. It also is cheap and leaves a nice black mark on white paper. It bonds nicely to the clay used as the pencils "lead" and does not easily smear.
I personally believe that graphite was used because when u write on paper u sometimes touch it and lead is harmful to your health. Also when people chew on their pencils they would consume some lead again hurting their health.
I think people tried writing with all kinds of things; but chalk worked the best on a dark surface, and graphite worked the best on a light surface. I don't know why the previous answerer is so focused on lead.
Graphite is known for being slippery and soft in a way that its layers of carbon atoms can be rubbed off easily by friction. So when we write, the carbon layers flake off and stick to the paper. Graphite is baked with clay and used to make pencils due to this property.
The reason pencils are made out of graphite is because it's simply the best thing to use. Using graphite makes the writing more resistant to weathering and deterioration over time. Graphite is also easily removed by an eraser.
Graphite is a made of carbon whr each carbon is covalently bonded to 3 other carbons leaving one wch makes it slippery. The lead of a pencil is made of a combination of clay and graphite hence making it smooth on paper and other surfaces.
because its structure is made up of many sheets of carbon that can slide over each other, which is why a pencil comes off onto a page. better alternative to original lead, that deadly stuff
because it is soft and easily rubs of onto the paper
Graphite is the one that leaves traces on paper by rubbing.
Becuase lead is poisnous.
The core of any pencil is made from graphite (a form of carbon). They used to be made from lead until it was discovered that lead could be toxic if consumed. (all kids eat pencils!) The wooden outer bit is made of... well... wood! Usually ash, pine, or cedar.
Today, we use it for pencils. But since it can conduct electricity better than silver, and is stronger than diamonds, we can use it for digital technologies in the near future, such as TV screens. Insert mode
Ancient writing instruments were actually pieces of lead, but modern pencils contain graphite mixed with clay. The mixture's color is a lot like that of lead and it makes marks like a piece of lead, so the word is still used. The number indicates how hard the mixture is. #2 "lead" is fairly soft and is used for ordinary writing. #4 pencils are very hard and take an extremely fine point but are difficult to use for writing because they can actually cut through paper if pressed hard enough. They're used primarily in things like art and drafting, where a thin line is needed and the user is going to be very careful.
Leaves aren't used to make pencils....most pencils are made from a hollowed out shaft of wood and a stick of generelly circular graphite is put inside. but there are also some made from recycled newspaper rolled around the graphite which is better for the environment because it costs less trees their lives and uses less energy.
YES! Apart from wax pencils used for marking glass etc, and wax pencils used in colouring a drawing. And I'd forgotten the slate pencils I used at school. And since they Seem to be missing from the Wikipedia article on pencils, here a few comments.[A slate pencil was used in conjunction with a slate board. [I use imperial measures as metric seems incongruous in this context.] The board was, from ancient memory, [must do some research] a piece of smooth slate, about 8 inches long and 6 inches wide. Set into a slender protective wooden frame. The pencil was also a piece of slate formed into a rod about the size of a normal pencil, but perhaps 5 inches long. This was wrapped in paper and could be sharpened in a normal pencil sharpener. This was used for children practicing writing. The marks made on the slate surface contrasted well with the background and could be easily removed with a soft cloth or a wet wiping. ]

No, LED (Light Emitting Diode) is not used in pencils. Pencils are traditionally made with graphite or a mixture of graphite and clay for the writing core. LED refers to a type of electronic light source, not suitable for writing instruments like pencils.
