Why don't people go for cosmetic surgery?

• It's the fact that it promotes a continuing descent into all things vain. Rather than accepting their perceived (important keyword) flaws, growing, and developing character, they take a chance going under the knife. Plastic surgery rarely produces the desired results and creates more unhealthy obsession with things that would be relatively trivial in a mentally healthy person with proper priorities. Even if, by some miracle, someone is completely happy with their surgery, it only serves to perpetuate the cycle; for themselves and for others. The obsession doesn't go away in these people. Their thinking inevitably moves on to having more things done.
• The plastic surgery craze is insidious because it targets those who are obsessed with their outer appearance, not what's important. The mental and emotional toll on plastic surgery patients is, maybe unsurprisingly, widely disregarded. The simple fact is: mental and emotional stability are increasingly taking a backseat to physical appearance. People just don't realize what they're doing to themselves because they've never really valued anything other than physical appearance in the first place.
• The fact that these things aren't obvious to more people truly shows where our culture is heading.

I think it is personal reasons unique to each person. Either they feel the body is made by god and should not be altered, or they are horrified by the idea of someone cutting them up, or they dislike vanity, or they think it is a waste of money, or whatever. But they should keep in mind, that it isn't their body or their money. Some people are unhappy after having surgery done, even if it went well and some people love it. But, it isn't really business of anyone but the person going through it.

• There are too many burn victims and children who truly need the surgery. If I had the money to buy myself a pair of large breasts I don't think I could. It is a vain thing to think that large breasts are more important than a child who cant afford to fix their Clef lip.
• No one seems to have mentioned the distinction between cosmetic plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Very few people would object to someone having surgery to correct a birth defect such as a cleft lip, or having surgery to repair a face damaged by fire. The growing obsession with cosmetic surgery, however - having "work done" on increasingly insignificant "problems" - creates a climate where people feel they cant live with their bodies without going under the knife. Those who want surgery are becoming younger and younger, and we are approaching a point where teenagers are growing up feeling ugly because they haven't had a nose job or breast implants. Obviously there are occasions when cosmetic surgery can dramatically boast someones self-esteem, and in these circumstances, it is a good thing. However, more and more people want surgery, but we are not becoming uglier as a race, we are just adjusting our notion of what is beautiful and what is not. All of us are the product of billions of year's of evolution and sexual selection; we are the direct descendants of 100s of millions of others who have been found sexually attractive by someone else, we can't be that ugly. Learn to love the body you've got.

Some people are against plastic surgery because it is generally unnecessary surgery which comes with very serious risks. Not only that, but our society places great importance in appearance, which leads to unrealistic standards that young girls and women strive to uphold. Condoning plastic surgery only strengthens these insane standards and weakens the self esteem of girls and women who do not feel as though they measure up.

Also, it can some times go wrong so people disagree with spending the amount of money required.

Many people have low self-esteem. Plastic surgery helps raise their self-esteem. Others do it to please their partner. Some do it because it gives them an edge in their profession.
