There used to be many Ravens throughout England. There have been at least six in residence at the tower for centuries. It was said that Charles II wanted to remove them following complaints from the Royal Astronomer. But he was then told of the legend that if the Ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the White Tower, the monarchy, and the entire kingdom would fall. Charles was not prepared to take the chance, and instead had the observatory moved to Greenwich.

Since then the Ravens have remained. They are now looked after by the Ravenmaster at the Tower and their wings are clipped so they cannot leave.

They are now a tourist attraction.

Traditionally, it is said that if the ravens ever leave the Tower, Britain will fall to an enemy, so to keep them there, the flight feathers on one wing are trimmed to stop the ravens from flying away.

Probably because of the 'easy pickings' ! Ravens are carnivores - and there are thousands of pigeons in London. The ravens simply feed on the pigeons.

There are at least 7 individual ravens at the Tower of London. They are unable to fly away as the flight feathers on one wing has been clipped. There is a comment from the reign of King Charles ll that 'if the Ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and and Britain with it'. They are under the care of the Yeoman Warders and can live for more than 40 years.

Where are you most likely to see ravens in London?

The most likely place to see ravens in London are at The Tower of London. The ravens that live at the Tower of the London are known as The Guardians of the Tower. It is said that should the ravens ever leave the grounds of The Tower of London then the Tower shall fall and along with it the entire English Kingdom. The ravens at the Tower of London have had their wings clipped to prevent them all from flying away at the same time. This goes way back to the reign of King Charles II and it was the King himself who ordered that the ravens at the Tower be protected and that their wings be clipped to prevent his Kingdom from falling. There are seven ravens guarding the Tower today which is far fewer than the days of old although the story has it that only six ravens need be in place for the Kingdom and Tower to be safe from falling...so there are the six necessary and one spare...just in case. All six ravens have to leave before the Kingdom and The Tower will fall and there isn't any chance of that happening because the ravens are very well protected by The Raven Master and The Yeoman Guards (otherwise known as Beefeaters). The ravens have their own lodgings which they return to each evening which is close to the Wakefield Tower but every single day they all take their place guarding the four territories within the grounds. The ravens at The Tower are mainly meat eaters and it is forbidden for visitors to feed them or to get too close to them should they see them whilst walking around the grounds.
