A lack of physical activity and an overconsumption of high-calorie foods. The two factors mean the average American takes in a huge number of calories without expending nearly as many- resulting in weight gain.

High fructose corn syrup is the main reason for obesity. It is added to nearly everything to sweeten it and to bulk up the product so the consumer thinks he is getting more for his money. While HFCS is made from corn, it is corn that has been chemically altered, therefore the body does not recognize it and stores it as FAT.

The obesity epidemic correlates with overindulgence in refined processed carbohydrates, over reliance on personal vehicles (rather than walking), routine fast food (rather than home-cooked meals), addiction to refined carbohydrates, and pure ignorance about the importance of natural healthy food and exercise.

It is widely believed that Americans at large are far more interested in convenience and instant gratification than in cultivating the skills to properly care for their bodies. There does seem to be some hope for future generations, as health consciousness and "green" lifestyles have become a growing trend. With any luck, this movement will prove to be more than a fleeting fad.

Many Americans are overweight because we eat at McDonald's or other similar places. The meat they put in the burgers, chicken products, and all the other things they have there are not healthy. If you want to eat some meat go to a good store get Organic raised cattle and chickens. I know it is more expensive but would you rather have not as much money to spend on your huge SUV or money on your health and what you put in your mouth! Would you rather be shopping at Walmart for food or Whole Foods! I know the answer to that.

The problem is we eat whenever we feel like we are hungry and we eat too many refined (processed) carbohydrates. The problem is we are addicted to refined carbohydrates so we feel hungry or thirsty for them most of the time. Therefore, stop eating and drinking refined carbohydrates. Cook with good ingredients (as best you can according to your budget) and live a healthier lifestyle with more exercise.

When you eat a burger or other refined carbohydrates you feel sluggish and tired. When you have a nice fresh salad with a side of grilled, lightly seasoned chicken breast on a bed of lettuce with roasted pine nuts sprinkled on top you feel full (key), happy and energetic! Then, you feel like indulging in some healthy exercise.

Because of a society used to eating portions that are too big in addition to consuming too many refined processed carbohydrates. Refined processed carbohydrates are a major cause of weight gain, obesity, and many diet related diseases. Too many refined processed carbohydrates coupled with too little exercise. Two out of three Americans are now, consequently, overweight. For a list of refined processed carbohydrates, see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.

Obesity pays for fast-food establishments, which (in turn) pay for advertising. Obesity pays for hospitals, physicians, nurses and much of the medical profession. Obesity pays for clothes and fashion. Obesity causes us to die earlier, thus keeping the dealers-in-death in riches. Besides, obesity cures overpopulation. I don't see the problem? -)

The possible reasons apply to all overweight people not just Americans. They may be carbohydrate sensitive. They may be insulin resistant (syndrome X). They may eat too many refined carbohydrates. They may be addicted to refined processed carbohydrates. They may get too little exercise. Many overweight people and many normal weight people are addicted to refined processed carbohydrates. In addition, anyone who is insulin resistant (many people are without being aware of it) will gain weight easily but find it difficult to lose weight. For further information, and a list of refined processed carbohydrates (these foods are a major cause of weight gain, obesity, and many diet related diseases), see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.

The United States is the most obese country in the world because Americans take advantage of all the restaurants and fast food places that are around them. They can eat what they want, wherever they want, whenever they want, and however they want; and they make their own decisions whether to exercise or not after eating the food. Since most of their choices are unhealthy, they gain weight and eventually get obese But food is not the only problem. The United States has a variety of transportation, so Americans take advantage of that as well as their food advantage. For example: Instead of walking to the mailbox to get their mail, Americans use their car to retrieve it. Most countries don't have many fast food places and restaurants, and varieties of transportation that the United States has. That's why these countries have very few obese people.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States has the highest population of obese people, but not the highest ratio of obese to healthy. About 1/4 of Americans are obese. The main cause of obesity in Americans, and most people worldwide, is an unhealthy diet and little exercise. Eating unhealthy but exercising or eating healthy and not exercising is not the best health plan, but it wouldn't cause obesity. However, having an unhealthy diet and not exercising is extremely dangerous to one's health. This insalubrious decision is present throughout most Western countries. American food is high in fat, calories, sodium, etc. and are very greasy. The US is also home to thousands of fast food restaurants, as Americans have an impacient lifestyle, meaning they want things fast. American lifestyle is also very unhealthy and is a contributing factor to obesity. Americans spend hours daily sitting in front of a computer and/or television, and do not exercise as much as they should be. Most jobs in the US also involve sitting in a chair for eight or more hours a day, making them a part to blame for the rise of obesity too.

Even though the US has a high population of obese people, that does not mean the US is doomed and that nobody's trying to solve the problem. The fight against obesity is going strong and it is very probable the obesity rate will drop in the years to come. Throughout media, exercise and eating right is becoming more abundant and is trying to persuade Americans to better their lifestyles. Restaurants and food companies are also taking part in the fight by making their food healthier and limiting meal sizes. Schools are also offering healthier foods, as childhood obesity is rising too. Even the work force is taking a stance, and some work places offer gym memberships to employees. There are even stationary cubicles, where treadmills replace chairs, making employees exercise while working, ultimately eliminating the disastrous health effects of sitting for too long.

Overweight in America

There are many reasons why Americans are overweight. food portions have grown to immense sizes, causing the general public to consume more calories on a daily basis than we really need to be consuming.

Lack of Physical Activity

Lack of physical labor causes a person to become sedentary. Everything is convenient in today's world. We have dishwashers, washing machines, and clothes dryers; it seems we have a machine for just about anything we want to do. Those machines use electric energy; therefore, we do not have to burn calories or exert energy in order to get our chores done.

One reason why so many people are overweight is because of junk foods and sodas. Another reason is because of genetics, but exercising and eating healthy can help overcome genetics.
