=A - Airway - the patients airway must be clear and open. An unconscious patient lying supine will have an obstructed airway because the tongue will fall onto the posterior wall and prevent airflow.==B - Breathing - make sure the patient is breathing before attending to any injuries. ==C - Circulation - a patient that has a pulse is not necessarily alive, there may be an airway obstruction, be careful!=
A - AIRWAY -
Is there anything obstructing the flow of air between the patients Mouth or Nose, and the bronchus of the lungs?
Basically - Is there anything stopping air flowing from their head to their lungs and out again?
B - BREATHING -
How fast is the patient breathing? How often? Are the lungs fully inflating on both sides. Is a lung collapsed? Is there reduced air entry on one side?
Basically - Is air being fully drawn into both lungs, and are both lungs fully functional?
C - CIRCULATION -
Does the Patient have a pulse? How fast is it? Is it strong or weak? Is it irregular? What about other places in the body? Do they have pulses too? (Both arms? Feet? Neck? Wrists?)
Basically - Is their heart beating strong enough to produce a pulse?
(For First Aider's and Medical staff only)
D - DISABILITY -
Are they conscious and awake? Any Pain? Can move all of their arms and legs? Can they talk properly? Are they drunk or intoxicated? Have they hit their head? Do they normally behave like this? Can they remember what happened? Do their pupils react to light?
Basically - Are they doing everything they could normally do ?
