The Lakota call the Black Hills of South Dakota, "Paha Sapa" in Lakota, meaning "hills that are black", because their pine-covered slopes look as dark as shadows from afar.
The Black Hills National Forest is made-up of 1.2 million acres of meadows and tree covered mountains. The forest has 34 trails with more than 450 miles for hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and backpacking. Deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats roam freely throughout the forest.
Harney Peak is in the Black Hills. You can hike to the top of Harney Peak. It is the highest point east of the Rockies in the United States at 7,242 feet.
