They were colonized the Spanish/Portuguese, and if you know anything about the Spanish they were on a rampage to colonize and convert anything and anyone. The Spanish Empire brought Catholicism to Mexico, the Philippines, Guam, much of South America, Puerto Rico, and Cuba to name a few.

The majority of Filipinos are Catholics because back starting in the 1500s, when Europeans were trying to get into the Asian trading network, Protestant countries like England and the Dutch did not care much for converting, but the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese were more dedicated. Since mainly the Spanish conquered the Northern Philippines (south was Muslim), they were the ones who launched missionary efforts and because the island was isolated, they were very successful. The missionaries started with Filipino leaders who set up town squares with a church as the center. Then as time went on, the religion started spreading and Muslim influences started declining.
