The rings represent the five original continents, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and the America's (not in that order). There is no 'real' answer to this but I believe they are linked because it is a time when athletes from all around the world gather in one place to join each other in the Olympic Games. Representing a world where there is global peace and prosperity as well as some fun.
