Being part of the Lymphatic System which fights infections, the Tonsils can become infected themselves. In some cases the infection is so great that thje only course of action is to have them removed.

Because they become enlarged and the pockets become filled with food and bacteria, causing constant sore throats and infections. Enlarged tonsils can also interfere with eating and swallowing and can cause other problems as well.

People usually only get a tonsillectomy due to recurring infections of the tonsils (tonsillitis), chronic tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess (pus socket surrounding the tonsil), and tonsilloliths - tonsillar stones that cause pain and foul odor in the mouth.

The tonsils are taken out for a variety of reasons. The most common reason being tonsillitis This is when the tonsils are inflamed (or enlarged), usually due to an infection. If antibiotics don't work to limit the swelling, then are taken out. Also, mostly in young children tonsils are taken out because the child continuously gets strep throat or is a strep throat carrier. When the tonsils are removed, step throat doesn't usually come back, or very rarely.

Tonsils were routinely removed with almost any minor throat infection until the 1960s. In modern medical practice tonsillectomies are not routine and are done when life-threatening infections and airway obstructions develop. Repeated infections (7 in one year) indicate a likely need for tonsillectomy. Tonsils exist as a place for the body to combat infection, so routine removal is unnecessary surgery and is counterproductive. Despite being less common today than 50 years ago, about 400,000 people (mostly children) have tonsillectomies in the US each year. Tonsillectomy is not as simple and benign as often thought; about 5 - 7% of patients will return to the operating room or emergency room for primary or secondary hemorrhage. Some patients (statistics are incomplete) will develop post-surgical infections of the throat.
