Answer
A professional golfer once told me there is eighteen golf holes because there is eighteen shots in a bottle of Whiskie! Have you heard the 19th hole? It's a bar, why do you think they call it that!
Answer
There is eighteen holes because there is eighteen shots in a bottle of whiskey (others say scotch). Which now they have a bar called the "19th Hole". Coincidence? Well.... I asked this question to a golfer on the LPGA and so this is what she said! :)
Answer
I read that it used to be each course had its own number, eg 11, 23 and so one. One course changed there number to 18 and it gradually became the norm.
