It started in the 80's when Humpy Wheeler, founder at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Now Lowe's MS), thought of it as a way to entertain fans at the races. Wheeler has been known to do some crazy stunts to catch fan's attention like Motocross jumps and fireworks. He has even accidentally set Charlotte Motor Speedway president, Bruton Smith, on fire!
