Gargoyles are said to ward off evil. Logically they would be used on this cathedral to ward of evil spirits from the church. They are used to direct rain water away from the building preventing deterioration. In older times, thy were thought to ward off evil spirits.

∙ 14y agoThe purpose of gargoyles is to throw rainwater from the roof clear of the walls, to avoid damp. It was customary in the Middle Ages to carve them in the shape of devils and mythical beasts. Most of the gargoyles on Notre-Dame, however, are 19th century replacements.

∙ 12y agoAt the time when cathedrals were built, there was no downpipes to convey water from the roof. The purpose of gargoyles was to protect the masonry, by directing the water away from the walls. Putting numerous gargoyles also had the effect of sending down only limited amounts instead of a flow of rainwater. The fact of carving gargoyles has ornamental purposes.
