Many do use the letters of the English element name. However, the earlier symbols for elements often used the Latin names, such as:
Gold - Au for aurum
Silver - Ag for argentum
Mercury - Hg for hydrargyrum
Copper - Cu for cuprum
Lead - Pb for plumbum
Some cannot use the first two letters of their English names because these are already in use for another element. Californium is Cf because Calcium is Ca.
The symbols for the elements of the Periodic Table are often very similar to their names. In cases where they are different from their names, it is usually because of their name in Latin or German.
This is because the numbers in the stubstance are not always correct so having a image is much easier to understand and read and it makes it faster to learn
You use abreviations because a lot of the chemicals, metals etc. have names that are too long to put in one of those little boxes
They were initially represented by circles (to represent the atoms) with different additional symbols; but it turned out that was more difficult for printing.
most of the symbols are taken from the Latin root, that's why they don't match up with the English word. for example, gold is Au because in Latin gold is Aurum.
The names might be too long to be written on the periodic table, so symbols are preferred.
because symbols are a lot easier to remember.
Symbols represent name of the element. They signify the position of element in periodic table.
The Modern Periodic Table is useful because using the symbols are much easier than writing out the whole word.
Most of the symbols on the Periodic Table have symbols for the latin name of the element. AU = Aureum = Gold.
All of the symbols used in chemical equations are up on the Periodic Table.
The periodic table usually displays the symbols and names of the elements, along with information about the structure of their atoms.
Symbols represent name of the element. They signify the position of element in periodic table.
All the elements listed on periodic table has symbols for them. There are total 118 elements in periodic table.
the periodic table shows the elements forular/symbols
yes
The letters on the periodic table are the chemical symbols of the chemical elements.
He is the chemical symbol for Helium. In the periodic table we use the chemical symbols to identify elements easily because some elements have rather long names.
Symbols of elements areEnglish or latinwords or roots.
Symbols are used to shorten the names of the elements.
Lithium
so that we can identifythem
because the chemical symbols are different
