There's a number of reasons. Part of it is that the general public are mostly complete idiots when it comes to being motorists. Sorry if you don't like it, but it's true.
But the general public aren't entirely to blame. There's a number of completely uncultured, unsavory, self centred, pompous, arrogant, and just plain nasty truck drivers out there, and they're often taken as being representative. When you go to Wal Mart, and find a gallon jug full of urine left in the parking lot, and you see ten trucks parked in that lot, you don't know which truck it came from (or even if the truck it came from was still there), so it's an action you tend to associate with truck drivers in general.
So it's really a combination of things.
