Implantation will appear before you expect your period and many people mistaken it for spotting before their period begins. As mentioned before, most women do not experience a full on bleeding with implantation. Instead, they may experience a bit of spotting in their panties or even some pinkish or brown discharge. Implantation bleeding occurs when an egg has been fertilized and implants into the lining of the uterus. Because the lining uterus is made up of blood, there can be a bit of blood expelled in some women.
Most people have answered the "shedding of the lining" so I am only going to add (really simplified, so not all will like this explanation):
Blood is a part of the lining but this is not like an open wound inside. Your body collects the blood, fluids and tissues to make the lining - particularly to make it thicker and protective. This is why you will often find clots and other materials within it.
It is really tough to grow various tissues but blood is something that is produced by your body all of the time, on a regular basis. This replaces lost blood and refreshes it by allowing new blood cells to take over so older, dying (or dead) blood can be removed. Why not have it be made from cells that you are already making all of the time?
As well, blood has dissolved within it (or carried by various cells) many of the nutrients, minerals, materials, etc. used to sustain the life of your cells. It makes sense to have all of this nearby a place where you will be growing more cells (the fetus, the placenta when it forms, etc.).
Bleeding can come because of hormonal changes and because of implantation spotting. Neither is indicative of a problem, though. It's fairly normal. http://wish2conceive.com
