HDMI receivers are converters of standard television to HD television. They give you HD television channels instead of just normal channels. Not all channels can be HD quite yet but for the most part all of your channels will be HD.
There are 66 HD channels offered by Sky HD.
The dish box needs to be a HD box to receive the HD stations in HD.
They do have a HD channel, but it is for all the Disney channels. it is called Disney XD.

We are adding new HD channels throughout the year. On our website we have a link that shows all the HD channels available within the different programming packages we offer. Rumor has it that sometime in February Dish Network will be adding additional HD channels. I don't know what channels these are but would guess they are many that Direct TV added at the beginning of this year (USA, Spike, CMT, MTV, etc.)
You have the convenience to either display your programs in standard or high definition format which is a big plus if not all your channels are HD..
At my house in Texas, on DirecTV, ONE does the trick. I have HD channels.

Yes you get over 600 channels but you have to pay for it. You can get Sky, Sky + and Sky + HD. In the adverts in Avatar Sky said they are making Sky + HD 3D. Which will be good! But you have to pay for them all. I think Sky + HD is rubbish because its expensive and you have only got a couple of the channels that are HD!
It varies based on the televions provider. Most providers have the local chanels, movie channels, sports channels, and a couple education channels in HD. In time though this will increase and eventually everything will be in HD.
Sky TV offers various packages to their esteem customers, hence the number of channels available depends on the package a customer is willing to pay for, they range from 50 channels to about 400 channels.
