The seeming lack of bicycle specific lanes in the United States is due to many factors based on transportation infrastructure and the geographic magnitude of the country. First and chiefly most of the American economy (with the exception of major cities such as New York) are dependent and built upon for the use of the passenger car and commuter. The roads and highways were designed for the car accordingly. Second, the significant rural and suburban areas across the country are difficult to justify a demand for such lanes in sparsely populated areas.
