The ball in a pith ball elecroscope is small because the ball must be able to move with little forces. If the ball had a large mass it would be difficult for a small force of attraction to occur.

Principle of electroscope and types of electroscope?

Like charges repel and unlike charges attract each other this is the fundamental principle used in an electroscope to detect presence and amount of charge. There are mainly 2 tpes of electroscopes pith ball electroscope and gold leaf electroscope

In experiments involving a pinball electroscope what causes the pithball to move?

An electroscope is a device that detects and measures electricity. In experiments involving a pinball electroscope, the pith ball moves because of an induced charge.

How could you use a pith ball electroscope to learn which two objects that are made from different materials hold on its electrons more strongly?

ii

How does touch a small pith ball take away the charge on the pith ball?

The 'charge' in the pith ball is actually caused by too many or too little electrons. When you touch the ball, these billions of electrons would rather move to your nice, moist skin, than stay in the dry pith ball, because your skin is a better conductor than pith is.

What is pith ball?

Lightweight pith balls help to show electrostatic attraction and repulsion.A pith ball picks up electric charge.

If a negatively charged polyethylene strip touches a neutral pith ball what charge will it have?

the pith ball takes on a negative charge also, the charge transfers to the pith ball from the strip

What kind of charge the electroscope can detect?

The sphere of an electroscope is always neutral at first. Let's say a negative ebonite rod is brought close but not touching the sphere. (The entire electroscope is neutral). The electrons in the electroscope will want to repell the electrons in the rod so the electrons in the electroscope move down into the 2 leaves and then repell because there is a high concentration of negatives. When the ebonite rod is removed, the leaves go back to their straight position. The electroscope is always neutral but only a charge distibution occured. The number of protons and electrons remain the same. However if a charged rod touches the sphere then the electroscope will be charged because it a conductor and the charge from the rod transfers to the electroscope because the rod's caharges want to attarct to the electroscope's opposite charges. This is called charging by contact.

How is the pith-ball charged when it is repelled by glass rod?

A glass rod is -vely charge and repel a body of -ve charge .so if a pith ball is repelled ,the charge on it must be -ve.

What happen to the pith ball when the plastic rod rub with fur cloth is brought near it?

Assuming the pith ball is uncharged, and the rod isn't touching it: The electron particles on the fur will have come off on the rod, giving it a negative charge. As a result, the pith ball will be attracted to the rod because all uncharged matter is attracted to charge matter.
