Assuming you are connected to the audio output connectors on the TV, you might have to turn up the volume of the TV to get any audio to appear at the output connectors. If it is a high end set, go into the audio menu and switch the audio output to FIXED. This will give you full level audio at the connectors and then turn down the sound from the TV speakers. Don't use the internal speakers when using the sound system.

What provides better sound quality- an optical cable to the TV then the system or directly to the system?
If you're connecting out of the device to the TV's optical in, then from the TV's optical out to the receiver, you're wasting an optical cable. Just connect directly to the receiver. There shouldn't be any sound quality difference either way since it's a digital connection, but it's much cleaner with only one cable.
Im using a dvi-to-HDMI cable from my computer to my pioneer vsx1120k the dvi does not carry sound so im using a rca cable im only getting sound from my receiver when there is no HDMI signal any ideas?
Change the audio input selection on the Pioneer from Auto to Analog. The auto mode expects the audio to come from the HDMI port when it is plugged in.

It is better to say that it is because there is no air of any sort in space. Any gas can carry sound, it is not a special property of oxygen or carbon dioxide.
How do you install a equalizer onto denon 3805 receiver?
Basically you don't. The usual way to add an equalizer to a sound system has always been to use the tape/monitor loop in/out which was transmitting every sound signal from the active input of the receiver to the equalizer. Than the equalizer would do is job of equalizing the sound before sending back the signals in the receiver prior to amplification. To my knowledge, almost no home theater receiver if any have had this kind of input in recent years. You could still connect one source to the input of an equalizer and then connect the output from the equalizer to the receiver. This would not necessarily be a good solution given that: A) it would work for only one source. B) it would only work in analog so you wouldn't be able to experiment real 5.1 surround sound.
