Gays and Lesbians CAN get married and in fact do in Canada, Netherlands, Spain who have full marriage rights or Brussels, the UK and others for Civil Unions. In the US, there's Massachusetts and California with full marriage rights. There's no reason they can't in other places, other than hateful, uninformed people not wanting them to and making up ridiculous 'reasons' to justify their bigotry; I'm sure a very very small amount of reading will turn up an example of this mindset.
So in answer, strictly speaking, to the question "Why can't homosexuals get married?" the correct response is: They can and do. Just not everywhere.
