Freshly mowed grass can cause colic from the horse bolting it down too quickly. It can also trigger Laminitis from the sugars released during the cutting, and there is the possibility of the horse being poisoned accidentally from fluids leaking out onto the grass from the mower engine. never feed grass or yard clippings.

Well it really depends on weather the grass was cut using a lawn mower.Smoke fumes get onto the grass and is realy not good for any grass eating animal. They would generally turn their noses up at it anyway.Hand cut or slashed grass is different,it has no fumes on it.If im wrong someone please correct me.....REGARDS one horse five...

Mowed grass is not a good feed for horses for several reasons: * The main reason: mowed grass is moist. Hay is carefully laid out to dry before being baled, but mowed grass (if not properly and immediately treated) will rot. It can go mouldy or develop other rots inside it within a few hours of being cut, and this will cause serious digestive problems with your horse. Eating mouldy hay or rotting grass clippings is a very good way to give your horse or pony colic. * Grass as found in a backyard has often been sprayed with chemicals that will hurt a horse. * Backyard grass may contain poisonous plants. * Even if the plants are poisonous, they are not all ideal for a horse nutritionally. To provide the correct balance of nutrients, a horse should be fed a combination of good quality hay and concentrates in the correct ratio for the amount of work it does.

The horse could get founder. Founder is a disease in mainly the front hooves. It is an infection in the hooves that is basically laminites. You can ride a horse with founder, but check his hooves every time you ride and trim them often.

Not in all cases but it is good to keep them away from it because it could end up as colic. Try to keep them away from it as much as you can

Why does green grass make horses founder?

Green grass is alive, as apposed to hay. Green grass contains the natural sugars it needs to function. If your horse eats a lot of grass, they ingest a lot of sugars. Without adequate exercise to use the energy, they keep the sugars in their bodies. The sugars makes the laminae of the foot go soft. The coffin bone in your horse's hoof will detach from the hoof wall and rotate or sink, in which case the horse founders.
