Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are known as "The Visible Planets", and with good reason; they appear along the ecliptic (kind of an equator for the sky), and can be seen with the naked eye on a clear night. They look like stars, but they're not. Mercury and Venus are both called the "morning star" and the "evening star", because they're most visible around sunrise and sunset. (Neither goes high in the sky, because their orbits are so close to the Sun.) Mars appears as a red star, Jupiter's moons can be seen with an average set of binoculars (10x-12x), and Saturn's rings can be seen with a home telescope. How can you tell a planet apart from a star? Planets "wander" in the sky from night to night (the word "planet" comes from an ancient word for "wanderer)... and they DON'T TWINKLE.

The planets are generally too dim to be seen from such a distance, especially since they are hidden by the glare of the parent star.

Why can you see planets and stars on a night?

The reason you can see planets and stars at night is that their light is faint and the brightness of the sun obscures them during the day. At night, when the sun is not visible, the fainter light from the planets and stars can more readily be seen.
