You get the result for your systolic blood pressure when the cuff on the arm makes the blood pressure the same as when you heart is contracting. The diastolic reading is when the pressure is the same as the pressure in your heart when it is relaxed.

The high pressure of the contracting heart means that blood is forced into the arteries around your body, which are at a low pressure. If the pressure was not highest, the blood would not be able to travel away from your heart against gravity and pressure.

Basically the diastolic hypertension can be more critical because the diastolic pressure tells us the rate at which the heart relaxes. This is a crucial time because it is in this moment of the heartbeat that the heart is able to receive blood. If it is very high then it means the rate of the heart is high thus the less the heart receives blood.

Is blood pressure the pressure of blood in the arteries?

Yes, blood pressure is a measure of the pressure exerted on your arterial walls as the heart pumps blood throughout the body (systolic) over the pressure when your heart is relaxed (diastolic).

What measurements are taken when determining a person's blood pressure?

Systolic and Diastolic pressure measurements are taken. Systolic is the higher pressure measurement, when the heart ventricles are contracted, and Diastolic is the lower pressure when the ventricles are filling. So if somebody's blood pressure is 120/80, then 120 is the systolic pressure and 80 is the diastolic pressure

The difference between systolic and diastolic pressures?

Systolic BP should always be higher than diastolic BP.The number on the top is the systolic blood pressure and the number on the bottom is the diastolic blood pressure. The systolic BP is the pressure in the arteries right when the blood is pumped out of the heart, therefore the pressure is bigger. The diastolic BP is the pressure in the arteries after the blood has been pumped out and before the next heart contraction. At this moment, the heart is relaxed and the pressure is much lower.

What is the difference from systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure?

Systolic (the higher number) is a reading of the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart is beating at its maximum strength. Diastolic (the lower number) tells you what the pressure is in your blood vessels when your heart is at rest.

What is the medical term meaning difference between the systolic and diastolic blood pressure reading?

Pulse pressure is the difference between the systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

What is blood pressure used to evaluate?

Your systole and diastole (or systolic and diastolic pressure). Systolic pressure is the pressure your blood exerts on blood vessels when your heart pumps out blood while diastolic pressure is the pressure your blood exerts on blood vessels when your heart is at rest(in between pumps). Blood pressure is stated as systolic pressure/diastolic pressure. The normal BP is 120/80 mmHg.

What is a sentence using the word diastolic?

The systolic pressure is the upper number, while diastolic is the lower number. His diastolic pressure climbed to 120 in a blood pressure of 220/120.The woman's diastolic blood pressure fell with a large gap between the systolic and diastolic pressures.

What is the difference between systolic pressure and diastolic pressure?

systolic pressure when ventricals are contracting while during diastole they are in relaxed state

What causes a high diastolic but low systolic reading?

When a person is evaluated for high blood pressure), 2 values are recorded: systolic and diastolic blood pressures. Systolic (the higher number) is the pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts; diastolic (the lower number) is the pressure when the heart rests between contractions. A blood pressure reading is recorded as systolic /diastolic pressure, or "systolic over diastolic." Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures are measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). An example of how to read a blood pressure measurement is "120 mmHg/80 mmHg" or "120 over 80." High blood pressure in adults is defined as having either a systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or more, or having a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or more. In some people with high blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic pressures are high. However, older people often have a higher systolic pressure with a normal. This condition is called isolated systolic hypertension, which is still considered high blood pressure. In older adults because the arteries reduce in elasticity, they do not expand as easily causing an increase in the systolic blood pressure (Imagine the same quantity of blood flowing through a vessel that doesn't expand. It gets really crammed in there causing systolic blood pressure to increase). But because diastolic pressure is the minimum pressure exerted on the arteries during diastole, there isn't much distension and contraction of the arteries. Thus, reduced elasticity does not effect diastolic pressure causing a normal blood pressure reading.

Define systolic and diastolic blood pressure?

Blood Pressure: The force at which blood flows through the arteries in the body. Systolic: Refers to the pressure on the arteries as the heart contracts (squeezes). Diastolic: Refers to the pressure on the vessels as the heart relaxes.

If your blood pressure reads 128.58?

The first number would be your systolic, meaning the pressure in the vessels as the heart contracts, then the next number would be t he diastolic, when the heart is at rest. The average blood pressure is around 120 over 90.

High systolic low diastolic?

"Normal" blood pressure is somewhere between 90/60 and 140/90. Systolic - the top number Diastolic - the bottom number Systolic pressure is when the heart is contracted and squeezing blood out of the heart. Diastolic pressure is when the heart is relaxed and letting blood flow into the heart.
