IRRIGATION IN Pakistan

Before starting my essay i want to tell you what does irrigation mean ,Irrigation can described as the act of artificially applying water to soil to allow plant growth. This can also include applying water to a lawn or garden. There are many types of irrigation where the most common are the hose and press pump methods

Irrigation is useful becauseIt brings more water to areas that would naturally not have that amount of moisture available to grow crops.

Irrigation in its most common definition is the watering system used to grow crops.

Pakistan is an agricultural economy but there is very little or no rainfalll in most places so irrigation becomes necessary to support the agricultural base.

Pakistan is highly dependent on agriculture, which in turn is dependent on water. Of the79.6 million hectares of land that makeup Pakistan, 20 million are available for agricultural. Of those 20 million hectares, 16 million are dependent on irrigation. It isestimated that up to 90% of Pakistan's agriculture is dependent on irrigation. An evenmore important fact is that many of Pakistan's industries are agro-based, such as thetextiles industry

The main reason behind it is that Pakistan is quite an agricultural country(much of Pakistan's population is related to agriculture). Our agricultural products not only meet the

nation's requirements but are also exported to generate revenue for the country.

So the amount of food, water, etc. can be even.

IN pakistan irrigation is also used for farms and gardens

In pakistan most large dams are built in the North, but small ones are mainly in the middle of pakistan.

Three main dams Mangla, Tarbela and Warsak were constructed for the purpose of generating electricity and irrigating agricultural land. In addition, there are 23barrages/head works/syphons; main irrigation canals are 45, which have extended up to40,000 miles. Similarly, there are 90,000 water courses, which are extended up to one million miles.

IN pakistan barrages needed to stop monsoon flows from being wasted

There are seven major Barrages of Pakistan:

1. Tounsa Barrage

2. Jinnah Barrage

3. Chashma Barrage

4. Guddu Barrage

5. Sukkur Barrage

6. Kotri barrage

7. Rasool Barrage

A barrage is built across the river. Iron gates are fixed under the bridge. In this way the water of the river is diverted to canals. Gates can be controlled by machines for closing and opening. The quantity of water flowing in these canals can be increased with the help of three gates.

a system dividing the agricultural land into sections by mud barriers as shown in the picture on the second page. The water flowed into the beds by means of canal; each canal brings the water to about eight different beds.

there are - 45 main canals

and about 120, 000 tertiary channels.

Getting water to plants is necessary no matter where the plants currently are. Plants need water to grow and flourish. In Pakistan, because the climate is drier, irrigation is necessary because it is unlikely that there will be sufficient ground-water without irrigation (unlike Seattle where there is a much higher likelihood of there being a large amount of groundwater).
