Their music had a different sound than what was on the market at that time. It was quality music performed by consummate professionals. The strength of the music itself is mainly credited to the guys Bjorn (guitar) and Benny (piano), but the two women, Agnetha and Frida, were as equally important in the makingof the superstar-status of the group.

In many ways ABBA could be said to be typical; so many pop groups have followed their pattern - two nice-looking girls heading the act in glamorous clothes, singing catchy tunes, many of which make you want to get up and dance. So why were Abba so phenomenally successful whilst other similar outfits have had only mediocre success? What made this particular Swedish group stand out? As is usually the case, it was a combination of factors:

Abba were the first of their kind

The two female/two male set-up was quite unusual.

Visually, Abba stood out from the crowd

As much as their outlandish outfits make our toes curl now, they certainly made Abba stand out from other bands (and now provide for many a lucrative fancy-dress business). The attractiveness of the two girls is, of course, another important factor in their visual appeal.

Benny and Björn's wonderful lyrics

Benny, Björn (and sometimes Stig, too) wrote amazing pop lyrics. How many girls who were 17 in 1976 yearned to be that Dancing Queen, young and sweet, having the time of their life? Answer: millions. (I know - I was 14 going on 17 at the time!) What youngster, downcast about a broken relationship, wouldn't but uplifted by Chiquitita's "But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you"? Then there's the more mature Winner Takes it All , comfortingly empathetic for anyone whose marriage is struggling

Agnetha and Anni-Frid's vocal harmony

The lyrics, however, would not have been nearly so effective without the beautiful harmony of the two girls' voices.

In his book ABBA-Just

How DID They Do It?, Christopher Patrick, chronicles inthis armchair guide the musical soundscape

of the famous group andgoes into the composition of ABBA's

music. According to Patrick, he, over a four year period, dissected the music of ABBA to find out exactly what made it 'tick'. Some of his findings include:

ABBA were pure musical economists who's songs were based on the 'do-re-mi'

structure, the technique that allows the song to be received and embedded in your brain. This is probably why you can't get these tunes out of your head.

Another fact, Bjorn and Benny did know how to write actual music. They counted on the girls of the group, Agnetha

and Frida,

to decipher and interpret the songs. That should dispel the rumor that the girls were merely 'fluff', not serious musicians.

According to Patrick's book ABBA created their unique sound, the'one voice'sound, forever changing and stretching the tones, styles and ranges of their voices to sing eachsong.

It should be added, that the women in the group were accomplished muscians even before their time as ABBA members, and Bjorn and Benny, decades after the demise of the group, have continued to work together, writing music without the women, so theycan function at a high level on their own.

No band could survive and thrive without talented songwrites, singers and management. ABBA had all of those and more. Bjorn Ulveaus, the unofficial lead, and Benny Andersson, on keyboards, made a wonderful writing team. Their songs appeal to large audiences the world over. The women of the group were attractive and talented singers in their own right. And with their manager Stig Anderson, all the 'stars' were aligned for superstardom.
