Beatrix Potter started writing and illustrating Children's Books by creating stories and sketches for a young friend who was ill. Inspired by her interactions with animals and nature, she eventually self-published "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" in 1901, which went on to become a bestseller.

She originally drew a rabbit called Peter which she kept as a pet. In 1893 she illustrated a letter which she sent to the son of her ex-governess, who was ill, to entertain him. She was persuaded to turn this picture-letter into a book, the first commercial edition of which appeared in 1902 in the UK.
