Britain did not oppress Australia, and force it to remain a colony. There was not the same violence as seen in the American War of Independence, and perhaps Britain wanted to avoid replaying this event.

The fact is that Australia had enough wealth and significance on the world stage by the beginning of the 20th century to make a successful bid for self-government.

It considered that the colonies with stable populations should rule themselves. This began with New Zealand in 1848 as a unified state. While this was being arranged, the Colonial Secretary offered the same self-rule with an Australian overall government to the Australian colonies and Van Diemen's Land. The Tasmanians were very enthusiastic as it gave an opportunity for the poverty-stricken colony to gain benefits from the richer colonies; the richer colonies saw no benefit to them and rejected it. However in 1851 Britain appointed the Governor of New South Wales to be also Governor General of Australia. This lasted for five years, but the governors of NSW did not take up the responsibility as they did not have a national Executive Council to advise them, and they could not use their NSW Council for this as that bias would disadvantage the other Colonies. This Governor General appointment was discontinued after five years of disuse, and did not reappear until Federation in 1901 when the Colonies were eventually able to agree on the terms.

Why did the British rule over Australia?

The British ruled Australia because they were the ones who colonised Australia. Australia did not achieve self-government until federation in 1901, and even that was still subject to British rules and guidelines, to a lesser and lesser degree, right up until the Australia Acts of 1986. Although the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia came into effect at Federation, this did not mean that Australia was now independent of Britain. When the UK approved colonial federation, it simply meant that the six self-governing states of Australia allocated some functions to a federal authority. Australia gained the status of a Dominion, which meant it remained a self-governing colony within the British Empire, with the Head of State being the British monarch. The British government appointed Australia's Governor-General and State Governors, who answered to the British government.
