The Berlin Wall was erected in 1961. Between 1949 and 1961 nearly 2. 5 million East Germans left to live in Western Germany. The wall was built at the suggestion of Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev to stop the mass exodus.
There are many reasons as to why Nikita Krushchev ordered the construction, but one of the main factors was the poor state of East Berlin's economy. Professionals such as doctors, teachers, lawyers, etc,. were leaving for the better living conditions and better paying jobs in the west. This meant the East Berlin population was poorer, less skilled and less educated. Krushchev knew that his Berlin could not survive without these people and therefore walled them in so that they couldn't see West Berlin, "the window of the west", and wouldn't leave to find a better life there. Sadly, it worked but it did come at a cost-many families were separated and people were imprisoned for decades or died trying to escape.
Nikita Khrushchev, The soviet premier at the time of the Berlin wall basically built the wall to prevent GDR citizens escape into the 'Capitalist west', At the time Many Berliners were flooding across the Border into West Berlin leaving the Soviet Union and the GDRs Control.
Berlin was open to begin with, but those from the East saw how much better life, the economy especially, was on the West side where freedom, and Capitalism, reigned. They wanted Opportunity for their families, and moved to the other side. Once the Communists realized what was happening, they built a "wall" to keep their people in with armed guards that would shoot escaping people. They could not even visit their families in the West for years. Occasionally, people would escape or refuse to return from an approved trip, but if family members were still in the East, they were threatened with their safety if they did not return. Those in the East suffered poverty as well as lack of Freedom. It was very sad.
