Because King Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife, who did not produce him a healthy son as an heir. The Catholic Church would not permit him a divorce, so he started the Anglican Church, with himself named 'Protector of the Faith".
Henry VIII wanted to marry Anne Boleyn in hopes of having a male heir. The Pope would not annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, so he had Parliament declare him head of the Church, which became the Church of England.
Because King Henry VIII needed to divorce Catherine of Aragon because he felt their marriage was cursed because she had been married to his dead brother Arthur. He wanted a son and their union produced three which all died in infancy. He wanted to Marry Anne Boleyn thinking that if he switched wives then the curse would be broken and he could get the male heir he desired. Of course, that didn't happen as Elizabeth I was born of that union and Anne Boleyn was subsequently beheaded. This is called the English Reformation in England.
Henry VIII wished to divorce his first wife so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope refused to allow him to divorce. So, Henry created a new church called the Church of England. This took England away from Catholicism and closer to Protestantism. When Edward, Henry VIII's son reined England, it became a Protestant country. In 1549, Cramner's English prayer book was introduced to English churches. Churches were made to take down all their holy statues and eradicate fancy clothing and most Saints Days were abolished. When Edward's sister, Mary took to the throne England became a Catholic country yet again. When Mary died the country converted to Protestant once more, under the hands of Elizabeth I. Despite all threats that attempted to restore England to Catholicism, Protestantism remained strong.
King Henry VIII was having problems finding a wife who would provide him with a male child to whom he could leave his kingdom when he died. He asked the pope for a divorce so he could marry another woman. When the pope refused, Henry became angry and named himself the head of the Church in England and said he would no longer follow the pope and the Catholic Church. Of course, one of the first things he did after declaring himself the head of the English church was to grant himself a divorce. He then confiscated all property owned by the Catholic Church, ordered the killing of approximately 5,000 priests and outlawed the practice of the Catholic faith in England, under the threat of death for doing so. As you might imagine, the number of Catholics in England fell dramatically. Many citizens continued practicing their faith "underground", or in complete secrecy. It was made a law that none of the Royalty could be Catholic or marry a Catholic, without forfeiting their crown. This law was finaly reversed in 2010.
Henry VIII separated from the Roman Catholic Church, establishing the Church of England which was Protestant with Catholic tendencies such as elaborate ceremonies.

Southern Ireland has a Catholic majority, while Great Britain had a Protestant majority. This is also the historic reason that the six counties of Northern Ireland did not become part of the Irish republic, because they have a large Protestant population.

Britain is predominantly Protestant, while the Republic of Ireland is predominantly Catholic. Many have suffered through things that happened during the troubles, further making them against the whole idea of a united Ireland. There are lots of reasons.
