There were two forbidden trees in the Garden of Eden: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

If Adam and Eve ate fruit from the Tree of Life they would become immortal like the gods, but in their innocence they did not realise they would one day die, so this fruit was of no interest to them. By eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil they would become like the gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."). The only difference now between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal.

In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the tree of life. In the Genesis story, Adam and Eve could not be allowed back, for fear they would eat of the second tree.

AnswerIn the Book of Genesis, there were two forbidden trees in the Garden of Eden - the Tree of Life, and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat of either.

Once Adam and Eve had eaten the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, they would become like gods. In fact Genesis 3:22 tells us this: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), but they had also become aware of their mortality.

When they had eaten the forbidden fruit, the only difference between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die. By eating of the tree of life, they knew they would then also be immortal. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the tree of life. Adam and Eve could not be allowed back, for fear they would eat of the second tree.

Answer:

The matter wasn't in the "eating of fruit"... but in "the disobedience to the Commandment." The same issue that all of mankind is to be tried and tested by in the end [at the Last Day; Judgment Day]... and by which the "called-of-God" [His 'elect'; predestined] are being tested in this present dispensation of time.

God demands it of all of those whom He has called. As any father demands the obedience of his children to the rules and laws he sets down for his household.

Noah "obeyed God's voice" and built the ark as commanded.

"Because that ABRAHAM OBEYED MY VOICE, and kept My Charge, My Commandments, My Statutes, and My Laws." (Gen.26:5)

It was the same deal for Abraham's children... if they were to have received God's Promises:

"Now therefore, IF YE WILL OBEY MY VOICE INDEED, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people..." (Ex.19:5).

"Ye are My friends, IF YE DO WHATSOEVER I COMMAND YOU." (John 15:14)

No father wants his children to suffer... which is why he lays down the law to them for them to obey and not suffer. Yet, unless children taste the fruits of their disobedience... there is no comparison between "good and evil" by which righteous character development is achieved.

It's ultimately the "choice" between good and evil that all men must decide for themselves. Which one they will EMBRACE -- God's laws of "Love" and "Life"... or the ways of "hatred" and "death."

"See, I have set before thee this day LIFE and GOOD, and DEATH and EVIL; in that I Command thee this day TO LOVE THE LORD THY GOD, to walk in His ways, and to KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS and His statutes and His Judgments, that thou mayest Live and multiply..." (Deut.30:15-16).

Adam and Eve were the first two people who initiated the creation of all the future generations of mankind. And mankind's character development fell to and began with them. And they chose the way that all children ever since have chosen; the way of selfish, rebellious human nature, which seeks to gratify the five physical senses of the flesh -- TO GO THEIR OWN WAY WITHOUT GOD.

No father wants to see his children suffer. But the laws need to be set out there for them to see and know -- whether they obey them or not. Then... when the suffering begins, they'll know and understand why.

And "character" [which no one can merely hand to their children] and all of the unique personalities that everyone becomes may begin to develop and grow.

"...not only so, but we Glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience [character]; and experience [character], Hope: and Hope maketh not ashamed; because the Love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us." (Rom.5:3-5)

Life is a matter of "choices." Choosing between "good and evil." And "overcoming the bad choices"... ideally, through the Love, Grace, Mercy, Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding of our Creator, Jesus Christ [John 1:3].

Otherwise, our choices [the really big ones] will overcome us.

"...To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the TREE OF LIFE, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." (Rev.2:7)

It wasn't about the "fruit they ATE"... but the "fruit they BORE" through their disobedience to God's Command. Their WORKS... their ACTIONS in response to the Commandment. That's the thing by which all men will be measured in the Judgment -- their "works."

Adam. Eve. Everyone.

"And, behold, I come quickly; and My Reward is with Me, to give every man according as his work shall be." (Rev.22:12)

"...and the dead were Judged out of those things which were written in the books [of The Bible; see John 12:48], ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS [their 'fruits'].

"Ye shall know them by their fruits..." (Matt.7:16).

They were told by God not to eat from that tree because when they do, they will lose the glory of God that clothed them. But they were tricked by the serpent, the devil when he lied to Eve saying,'Eat from the tree and you will be like God'. Therefore, she was so eager and tempted to eat that fruit and be like God.

According to the Biblical narrative, the snake convinced Eve that she was mistaken and that the fruit would not kill her. Adam ate it because after eating it herself, Eve gave it over to Adam and encouraged him to eat it.
